Martham Boats offers Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) examinations on the Norfolk Broads. Our qualified Boat Safety Examiner can examine your boat at our riverside base in Martham or, by arrangement, at a local mooring.
What Is a Boat Safety Examination?
A BSS examination checks your boat against the applicable Boat Safety Scheme requirements. The scheme aims to reduce the risks of fire, explosion, carbon monoxide poisoning and pollution on inland waterways.
An examination is not a full condition survey or a guarantee that a boat is suitable for a particular use. Owners remain responsible for maintaining their boats and equipment between examinations.
Does My Boat Need a BSS Certificate?
Boats within the scope of the scheme generally need valid BSS certification for an annual Broads toll. Exemptions and different arrangements can apply, including for short visits. Check with the Broads Authority if you are unsure about the requirements for your boat.
How Long Does Certification Last?
BSS certification normally lasts four years. Check the expiry date on your existing certificate and arrange your next examination well in advance.
Arranging Your Examination
Contact our office with your boat's type, location and current certificate expiry date, if applicable. We can discuss a suitable appointment, the examination fee and whether your boat can be examined at its present mooring.
Ask our examiner how to prepare your boat and what access will be needed to its equipment and installations.
If Your Boat Does Not Pass
The examiner will explain which requirements have not been met and provide a written record of the findings. Any necessary remedial work must be completed and compliance confirmed before a pass can be recorded.
