Learn to SUP Course
Beginner's Stand Up Paddle Course is an introduction to the sport. 
We teach beginners the basics of how to Stand up Paddle in the gentle and safe enviroment of the Norfolk Broads.
- Understand the enclosed flat water environment
- Identify SUP hazards
- Choose a safe SUP location
- Enter and exit the water correctly
- Paddle effectively in standing position whilst maintaining balance
- Paddle effectively in kneeling position whilst maintaining balance
- Demonstrate correct method to change direction
- Demonstrate correct paddling technique
- Demonstrate correct wipe-out and dismount
- Demonstrate correct SUP etiquette
- Choose suitable board and equipment
- Identify how to care for the SUP environment
This is a land and water based course.
The boards and equipment are supplied on this course. wetsuits required during cold months, shorts and tea shirt when warm.

SUP WATER RESCUE AWARD
For those of you who need to do the SUP water Rescue Award, we'll be running one at Martham on the 13th April. This course has been written in conjunction with Chris Rea (Surf lifesaving GB trainer) and Ollie from the RNLI. It's a one day course and is sports specific. For course info select below.
Please contact us to arrange doing your SUP Water Rescue Award at any time. With the exception of those who have bronze medallion or lifesaving awards, this course is now an essential part of the ASI course structure.

Some of the issues covered include;
signals, working with lifeguards in close proximity, spinal lift and management, board rescue techniques, recognition of signs of drowning and plenty more.
ASI L1 Instructor Course
Foundation certificate to manage and instruct stand up paddle boarding sessions in enclosed flat water locations defined as inland waterways and bodies of water including creeks, rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, canals that are no wider than 1 km, with no swell or breaking waves.
Career outcomes
- Stand up paddle instructor within the stand up paddle or outdoor recreation industry.
- Industry job roles that require SUP knowledge (e.g. sales rep, retail).

- Understand the role of the SUP instructor
- Identify and manage SUP risks/hazards
- Identify emergency processes and response
- Develop a lesson plan
- Demonstrate instruction and coaching methods
- Implement minimal environmental impact strategies when delivering SUP sessions

Entry requirements
Before enrolling, you must have enclosed flat water level or above SUP skill and knowledge.

Level 1 SUP Instructor (Enclosed Flat Water) Training Manual
Assessment & Competency Record Book
Minimum of 12 months membership
Course requirements
1) Complete Assessment Record Book and return to ASI for assessment
- complete written assessments
- demonstrate ability to paddle safely and effectively in enclosed flat water locations: entry and exit into water; stand on the board; correct paddling technique; changing direction; paddle on knees; wiping out safely; SUP manoeuvres (step back pivot turn, side-turn, stopping)
- demonstrate lesson delivery
2) Complete 10 hours practical experience with an ASI accredited or approved SUP school and have your Record Book log signed by SUP school owner OR have SUP Trainer sign your Record Book log stating you have the required competency.
Additional certification required
Provide copy of your:
- current flat water or surf rescue certificate
- senior first aid certificate.
You can complete these after enrolling but must be completed to obtain your ASI qualification. Find Rescue & First Aid Training Providers.
Qualification
ASI Level 1 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Enclosed Flat Water)
L2 ASI Instructor Exposed Water
Manage and instruct stand up paddle boarding sessions in exposed water locations defined as protected coastal beaches and bays and harbours with shore break no more than 1 ½ feet, swell size up to 2ft and the absence of breaking waves.
Career outcomes
- Stand up paddle instructor within the stand up paddle or outdoor recreation industry.
- Industry job roles that require SUP knowledge (e.g. sales rep, retail).

- Understand shoreline topography, wind and tidal flows on participation
- Identify and manage exposed water SUP hazards
- Identify emergency processes and response
- Develop a lesson plan for exposed water locations
- Identify suitable SUP equipment
- Demonstrate exposed water instruction techniques
- Implement minimal environmental impact strategies
Before enrolling, you must have:
- Exposed waters SUP skill and knowledge.
- ASI Level 1 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Enclosed Flat Water) certificate.
Level 1 SUP Instructor (Enclosed Flat Water) Training Manual
Assessment & Competency Record Book
Minimum of 12 months membership
Course requirements
1) Complete Assessment Record Book and return to ASI for assessment
- complete written assessments
- demonstrate ability to paddle safely and effectively in an exposed water location with swell size of 2 ft: entry and exit into water negotiating 1 ½ foot shore-break; controlling the board in choppy waters, using the waters movements to best advantage, demonstrate a variety of differing paddle steering skills (step back pivot turn, side-turn, stopping), changing direction effectively, safe wipe-out, remount board.
- swim 200 metres without stopping in exposed water locations with 2ft swell.
- demonstrate lesson delivery.

For 2012 we are busy preparing to launch no less than three new levels of specialisation; Downwinding, Racing and Adventuring, each level having had experts appointed in the various niche areas, to add to our L1 Flat Water, L2 Exposed Water and L3 Beginner Surf courses.
